She is fed by tube. The daughter is one of five children. Using a limited-access wheelchair meant she often missed out on family activities. When the family reached out to the Fund, we awarded a grant towards an all-terrain specialist pushchair. He underwent chemotherapy from August until February this year. During his absence from work, Richard moved to half pay and his wife’s income reduced as she took time off to care for him. Richard also cashed in his pension early to pay off their mortgage, as he was uncertain of his future. The Fund awarded a financial grant to cover gas, water and council tax bills. Having previously completed a 10k for the Fund, we knew he had the legs (pardon the pun) to get over the line. It was fantastic that he could start alongside 45,000 other runners in Greenwich. He completed the 26.2 miles in an impressive 4:37:16, looking ‘fit as a fiddle’ at the finish line. During this time, her partner Kevin was made redundant and her eldest daughter Rachel moved back home to support the family. Whilst Helen was off work, they accrued debt for petrol and hospital travelling expenses. The Fund were delighted to contribute towards mortgage payments. Halle currently relies on special braces and core strengthening exercises, not provided on the NHS. Alan was referred to us by his Welfare Manager; “The Fund lifts a weight off our shoulders. We’d have struggled without the help. He was airlifted by private air ambulance to the Liverpool Walton Hospital, which left him with a £5000 bill. James spent three months in hospital with sever spinal injuries. He is now wheelchair-bound. Six months after the accident, James returned to work in an administrative role after previously being a driver. She has uncontrolled epilepsy and is blind to everything other than bright lights. Her only way to communicate is via a computer. Given her complex medical issues, Kevin and his wife Katrina need to ensure she is safe at all times, especially when travelling in the car.
